The event is titled "Five Rooms," and the idea is to bring literature a little closer to the audience in a different way. I don't stand on stage and lecture from above; instead, we experience a book together. And when I say "experience," I mean "experiencing" with our various senses, not just with our ears. The book we'll be experiencing together is my short story, "Nimmerleinstage." In the story, we follow a man for seven days as he wanders the streets of Brussels. And we'll experience this walk through Brussels tonight as a walk through this wonderful Brussels house. I'd love to tell you more about the house later, but we have to go now.

Today I'll be reading from my book *Nimmerleinstage*, and to understand what it's about, it's best to start with the first chapter. Let's begin with the story. In this case, our story begins with an ending. The end of the world

He didn't want to face the final judgment without his glasses, even though, given the end of the world, there were probably bigger problems than that, but he wanted to deal with those once he had a clearer picture of the situation.
Monday morning in April, when the darkness of night refused to lift, and Maxturned his bedroom upside down looking for his glasses. He didn't want to faceJudgment Day without his glasses, even though, given the end of the world, there wereprobably bigger problems than that, but he wanted to deal with those once he had aclearer picture of the situation.
